1. Michael B Jordan set to make directorial debut with ‘Creed III’
Michael B Jordan will be flexing his muscles in front of and behind the camera on Creed III, as co-star Tessa Thompson has confirmed Jordan will direct the upcoming third installment in the series. “He is directing the next Creed,” she told the media, joking of Jordan’s status as the reigning Sexiest Man Alive: “It’s going to be ammo, I think, for me when he is engaging with me as a director. I’m just going to tell him to dial down the sexiness.”
Michael B Jordan assumes directing duties from Ryan Coogler and Steven Caple Jr, who helmed the first and second Creed films, respectively, and carries on the franchise’s legacy of its star taking over as director. Alongside Jordan’s Adonis Creed, Thompson will once again co-star as love interest Bianca, with filming set to happen “very soon,” she teased.
2. Nigeria: Omo Ghetto: The Saga breaks all-time Nollywood box office record despite pandemic
Omo Ghetto: The Saga has become the domestic box office title with the highest opening weekend of all time. The title hauled in N98.50 Million naira in its first opening weekend + advanced screening to total more than N124 Million. The female lead ensemble comedy co-directed by Funke Akindele and JJC Skills hit the big screens nationwide on Christmas day to a movie market whose appetite has been wet on social media with the colorful gangster theme.
On its strategic debut day, cinema lobbies were filled with anticipating movie fans, tickets were selling fast behind the counter and more importantly positive word of mouth floored in on social media. All of these events and more drove market demand already on a gear 2 to a gear 5 propelling the movie to sold-out status.
3. South Africa: SA moves to level 3 of lockdown
In a move to curb the spread of COVID-19, South Africa has moved to adjusted level 3 from level 1 with immediate effect, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday. The President’s announcement comes after South Africa breached the one million mark of confirmed COVID-19 cases after 9,502 cases were reported on Sunday, bringing the cumulative total to 1,004,413 cases.
In addition, South African genomic scientists recently identified a variant of the SARS-COV-2 virus, currently termed 501.V2 variant, which appears to be more contagious than the virus that drove the first wave of infections. Under the adjusted, level 3 regulations, all indoor and outdoor gatherings will be prohibited for 14 days from the date hereof, except for funerals and other limited exceptions as detailed in the regulations, such as restaurants, museums, gyms, and casinos.
4. Ghana: NDC officially declares intention to contest 2020 elections in court
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially declared its intention to go to court to challenge the declaration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the President-elect by the Electoral Commission (EC) after the December 7, 2020, presidential election. A statement issued on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, and signed by the General Secretary of the NDC, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, stated that the party arrived at the decision following a National Executive Committee meeting today
In addition, the party will continue “all legitimate actions including protests to press home its demands for the government of President Akufo-Addo to enforce the rule of law,” it said.
5. Atletico Madrid: Diego Costa ends contract early
Spain striker Diego Costa is a free agent after Atletico Madrid agreed to end his contract early, paving the way for a possible Premier League return. The 32-year-old, whose deal was due to expire next summer, fell out of favor at the Spanish club. He has made only three appearances, all as a substitute, since mid-October.
“The striker asked to leave the club for personal reasons a few days ago and on Tuesday signed the termination of his contract,” said Atletico. “The club thanks Diego Costa for his dedication during these years and wishes him well in the next stage of his professional career.” Luis Suarez and Joao Felix have been preferred to Costa up front this season.
