This year, the world changed! The fashion world was not left out as fashion weeks went virtual or had minimal guests. ARISE Fashion Week 2020 was not left out of the change either, as they embraced it. The continent’s most prominent fashion show had to adapt amid the coronavirus pandemic by going virtual and streaming to a global audience across multiple platforms.

With the theme ’30 under 30: The New Stars,’ this years’ edition marked the first time the fashion event is awarding monetary prizes to designers. “The whole idea is to help assist young designers in building their brands. We need a breath of fresh air. We need younger people to get into this space and be given the accreditation they certainly deserve.” – Ruth Osime.

Day 1 started out with stunning exhibitions by 20 designers in a fun evening spiked with performances from top artistes like Wizkid, Wurld, Wavy the creator, and The Cavemen. Fashion gives us fantasy, dreams, and hope — themes that ran through the collections of the contestants. ARISE Fashion Week Day 1.

Onalaja served looks with shimmer, pleats, metallic fabrics, sequins, interesting use of accessories, printed materials, and more that were for the young, young at heart, and also showcased the trends for 2021 such as fringe and skin tops. Clan as always sent looks down the runway that were colorful and thoughtfully put together. The collection featured ombre, bucket hats, corset and cut out detailing, chic headbands, with cuts that fit the boy like a glove. Crop tops, matching sets, puff sleeves, ruching, shorts suit, and more made up the looks in the brand’s collection.

Naomi Campbell in Mmuso Maxwell

Ghanaian designer Boyedoe took a play on denim and print, while South African design house, Mmuso Maxwell, presented their new Imbokodo 21 collection which was inspired by SA fine artist Tony Gum’s 2018 “Rock Cause Analysis” series. The collection featured elevated workwear looks with Naomi Campbell closing the show in the asymmetrical olive wrap jacket with matching pants. The collection also featured a forest green side pleat jacket, and matching pants, a variation of pleated dresses, and knitwear made of kid mohair.ARISE Fashion Week Day 1.

Vicnate is definitely in love with bold colors, as he sent out looks that ranged from deep red and green to canary yellow and fuchsia pink. Blacks were not left out of the collection as the outfits screamed “party!” and red carpet-worthy. An oversized bow, keyhole cutout, exaggerated shoulders, and more defined the collection. The first look sent out by DNA by Iconic Invanity was a protest on its own. With #EndSARS hand beaded into the outfit, to right from the nose mask, you’ve got to acknowledge that the designer is in touch with the realities we face. Fashionable face masks have long been a thing, and the brand gives you another reason to #BuyNigerian. The brand’s signature beading was seen in facemasks, sleeves, bodice, as well as hair accessories.
