1. BBNaija’s Mike expecting first child with his wife
Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Mike Edwards is expecting his first child with wife, Perri Shakes Drayton. Mike was the first runner-up of the fourth edition of Big Brother Naija. His wife Perri announced the good news via her Twitter page on Sunday, May 3, 2020.
“Been keeping a secret and pleased to announce, I’m pregnant and expecting my first baby. Me and @aireyysabout to be parents,” she tweeted.
Mike Edwards also took to his Instagram page where he shared that he and his wife are expecting a child. Congratulations to the couple on this great new journey.
2. FG receives $311m Abacha loot
The Federal Government, on Monday, confirmed they have received the $311m looted by the late military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha. It was reported that the loot was repatriated from the United States and the Bailiwick of Jersey.
The Attorney General of Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, said approximately $311,797,866.11 of the Abacha loot was repatriated from the US and Jersey.
According to Malami, the amount increased significantly from over $308m as stated in a press release in February to over $311m because of the interest that accrued from February 3, 2020, to April 28, 2020 when the fund was transferred to the Central Bank of Nigeria.
3. Kenyan nurses threaten to go on strike
Kenyan nurses have threatened to strike over a coronavirus risk allowance. Union leaders gave a two-week warning to the government that health workers could take industrial action if their demands for those on the frontline are not met.
Some of the issues that union officials want to be addressed include permanent employment for their members as well as pending promotions.
“It is disappointing to note that up to date the government has remained adamant or chose to totally ignore our grievances leaving the union with no option but to take further action,” George Gibore, secretary-general of the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) said.
Peterson Wachira, chairman of KUCO told the BBC that seven of their members have tested positive for coronavirus.
4. Trump predicts up to 100,000 coronavirus deaths in the US
US President Donald Trump has predicted 100,000 coronavirus-related deaths in the country and a vaccine to be ready by the end of the year, contradicting experts who said a cure is likely 18 months away.
Trump relaunched his election campaign on Sunday, forecasting an incredible future as he alternated during a two-hour broadcast between predicting a rapid recovery for the US economy and casting blame for the pandemic’s spread on China, where the disease is believed to have originated.
5. La Liga aiming for June restart as clubs return to training this week
La Liga organisers are aiming for a June restart to the season, which was halted by the coronavirus crisis, as clubs return to training this week. Players from the top two divisions will train individually after an agreement with Spain’s sports and health authorities that guaranteed the safety of both players and staff. Players must undergo test before they can return to training facilities.
Football in Spain was suspended indefinitely in March. The country’s top division has created detailed protocols for the return to training so proper health safeguards are observed. Part of this involves training sessions progressing from individual to small groups and then team training.
